As we plan the Community Center and Vocational School, we are learning from institutions with proven workforce-development models – and identifying practices that can be adapted for the Uco Valley.
In May, Executive Director Carolyn Gallagher traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, to visit Metropolitan Community College and meet with Brian O’Malley and members of the college’s leadership team.
At the Institute for the Culinary Arts, students gain hands-on experience in professional kitchens and baking labs while also developing the skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Alongside technical instruction, the program emphasizes communication, teamwork, leadership, professionalism, problem-solving, and an understanding of hospitality operations.
This integrated approach was particularly inspiring. Technical training can help someone qualify for a position, but soft skills can play an equally important role in helping them secure a job, work successfully as part of a team, and grow in their career.
The Vines Foundation is exploring ways to incorporate more of these practices into the vocational programs we provide and, ultimately, into programming at the future Community Center and Vocational School. This could include:
- Communication, teamwork, and professional conduct
- Résumé preparation and interview practice and English lessons
- Leadership and problem-solving skills
- Greater exposure to real workplace expectations
- More hands-on learning and connections with local employers
The goal is to create a more complete pathway from training to employment—one that gives students technical knowledge as well as the confidence and workplace skills to put that knowledge into practice.
We are also learning directly from the graduates of programs we have already supported. Their experiences are helping us understand where training is succeeding and where stronger connections between the classroom and the workplace are still needed.
